HVAC: System design essentials for existing commercial buildings

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024

Depending on the existing building type, design and its geographic location, there are several techniques for specifying HVAC systems. An existing building has its own requirements, and mechanical engineers must understand the client’s needs, the codes and standards, energy efficiency goals and the specific building requirements to successfully retrofit a system.

There are many factors to consider when choosing and designing HVAC systems for buildings. Those decisions ultimately influence how energy-efficient the building is. The major factors to optimize for energy efficiency are ventilation, zone control, heat recovery and operations.

Learning objectives

  • Learn about ASHRAE, International Mechanical Code and other guidelines that drive HVAC system design and specifications.
  • Understand HVAC design strategies, and the various products and systems available. Know the basics of how building automation systems and controls are integrated into this design.
  • Consider energy-efficiency goals, and what HVAC products or systems can help achieve them.
  • Review commercial buildings example retrofit or renovation strategies.
